What Is NODE+?

NODE+ is a handheld, wireless, sensor platform that is transforming how apps gather, process and use sensory data from the world around us. Combining advanced motion-sensing technology with interchangeable sensor modules to stream real-time information to any iOS or Android smart device.

What is NODE+ Motion?

Each NODE+ comes stock with motion. This is our fancy way of saying that the core of every NODE+ consists of three tri-axial sensors: gyroscope, magnetometer, and accelerometer. You can use NODE+ to push your fitness further, track your workout, sleep patterns, or even as a level to hang pictures or a motion-based remote control. Use it to map motion or set it up to notify you when your dryer stops moving after finishing a cycle. NODE+ can tell if it's simply being jostled or if it's flipping from end to end. With our Modules and open API, there is no limit to what can be developed with the power of NODE+.




What are Sensor Modules?

Sensor Modules are what makes the NODE+ such a powerhouse. The possibilities are endless. One Sensor Module can be added to either end of the NODE+, expanding it's functionality. Simply, plug the Sensor Module into one of NODE+'s end ports, screw in, and you're ready to sense the world. Easily communicate color, temperature, gas readings, and weather conditions on the go.

How do you use it?

Bluetooth 4.0

The NODE+ Wireless Sensor Platform is a modular device that communicates with smartphones via Bluetooth. Bluetooth requires less energy than Wifi and can send information directly to your Bluetooth enabled device. With new Bluetooth Low Energy, NODE+ can communicate with iPhone 4S and some Android phones at up to 50 meters with even less energy than conventional Bluetooth. With multiple NODE+s networked in your home or office, you can control the different devices by your location.

But, we wanted even more from this device. We wanted to make a tool with endless uses. So, we made a handheld sensor device that's easy to carry, attractive, and modular. NODE+ comes fitted with three standard sensors (motion), but can run two additional sensor modules, attached to either end. Since these modules are interchangeable, you can tailor your device to suit your need.


Apps and Beyond

With NODE+ apps for iPhone and Android, we got the ball rolling. But trust us, we’ve barely skimmed the surface. At Variable, we aim to give you the tools, then learn how they might be used. We put the challenge to you: what can you imagine? With the freedom of open API and the toolbelt that is NODE+, what could you build? Anywhere you can imagine it, you can use it.

Apple iOS Compatibility: For Bluetooth 4.0 Low-Energy, the following devices are compatible: iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 5th Gen, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Mini. The NODE+ is currently compatible with the devices shown. *More Android devices may be compatible but have not been tested.

Android Compatibility: For Bluetooth 4.0 Low-Energy, the following devices are compatible: Samsung Galaxy  S2, S3, S4, Note and Tab, HTC One, and the Google (LG) Nexus 4 or Newer. The NODE+ is currently compatible with the devices shown above. *More Android devices may be compatible but have not been tested.

Open API, Firmware and Source Code

The hardware of NODE+ is fixed, but we've left the firmware and API open and compatible with the Arduino platform. We'll also provide you with the free NODE+ demo app source code. At Variable, we're really big on making awesome tools and gadgets, but we're also big on collaboration. We have fantastic imaginations, but we can't imagine everything. That's why we've left lots of room for you to control the behavior and applications of these quality sensors. We want to see how you would use them.
